About This Course

Principles of Environmental Sustainable Development: Principle I of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development (1992) states that “Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature”. The objectives of this course are to introduce students to the definition and concepts of sustainable development and to explore the crosscutting relationship between health and sustainable development. The areas of focus will include:

Competencies

The goal of this course is to enable you to:

  • Describe U.S. and other international regulatory programs, guidelines and authorities that control environmental health issues.
  • Critically evaluate and analyze environmental or occupational literature and draw appropriate conclusions about the results.
  • Increase awareness of environmental or occupational health interventions and policies that reduce or eliminate health hazards.
  • Describe regional and internationally accepted legislative frameworks, conventions, and protocols that seek to regulate environmental or occupational health issues

Course Staff

Dr. Hugh Sealy

Dr. Hugh Sealy

Dr. Sealy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine at St. George’s University in Grenada. Dr. Sealy has served as Energy and Sustainable Development Advisor to the Governments of Barbados and Grenada as well as Lead Negotiator for the Alliance Of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS). Dr. Sealy was elected as a Member of the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Dr. Sealy serves as one of two representatives for Latin America and the Caribbean. Dr. Sealy received a B.Eng., in Chemical Engineering from McGill University, Canada in 1984, a M.Sc., in Environmental Pollution Science from Brunel University, UK in 1987, and in 1993 he earned a PhD in Environmental Science, University of Liverpool, UK. In 1980 Dr. Sealy was the recipient of a Barbados Scholarship, and in 1986 recipient of a Commonwealth Scholarship.

Grading

Students will be graded on a combination of a reflective paper (20%) exams (70%) and participation (10%).
