About This Course

Course Description: Concepts, Practice and Leadership of Public Health will introduce students to the history and the main components involved in the practice of Public Health, and its impact on the nation’s health system. The core areas of public health: Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Social and Behavioral Aspects of Health and Health Policy, will be highlighted throughout the course. Students will get an understanding of the tools needed to be effective leaders in carrying out the core public health functions of assessment, policy development and assurance.

This course is conducted with a combination of lectures, field visits, small group sessions and community presentations. The class will be divided into groups that will each develop and implement a community Public Health related project. Students are asked to come prepared to actively participate in the dissemination of material.

Competencies

The goal of this course is to enable you to:

  • Embrace a definition of public health that captures the unique characteristics of the field (e.g., population-focused, community-oriented, prevention-motivated, and rooted in social justice) and how these contribute to professional practice.
  • Apply the core functions of assessment, policy development, and assurance in the analysis of public health problems and their solutions
  • Identify the main components and issues of the organization, financing and delivery of health services and public health systems in the US and other nations.
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral skills for communicating with different audiences in the context of professional public health activities.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills for building partnerships.
  • Apply ethical considerations to different Public Health and Public Health related activities.
  • Develop awareness of the basic capabilities of Geographic Information Systems in Public Health.
  • Understand specific ways in which GIS can be used in Public Health.

Students will be graded on a combination of an article presentation (10%), exams (50%), article appraisal (10%), project(15%), PH unit evaluation (5%), research methods and ethics submission and participation (5%).
