About This Course

Principles of Biostatistics presents the basic methods of data description and statistical analysis used for planning, development, and evaluation of health problems. The course provides an introduction to sampling theory and descriptive statistics, discrete and continuous probability distributions, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, correlation and simple regression. Emphasis is placed on understanding and interpretation of data used in public health.

Required Materials - None.

Lectures: Monday and Wednesday 1:00 - 3:00 pm AST
End Date: April 7, 2017

Competencies

The goal of this course is to enable you to:

  • Know how to use basic statistical procedures commonly encountered in the practice of public health.
  • Know when to use these procedures as well as when not to (i.e., when they are not appropriate)
  • Understand the basic concepts of sampling, sampling variability, point and interval estimation, statistical inference, hypothesis testing with one or two samples, correlation, and linear regression.

Students will be graded on a combination of a 10 assignments (20%) 3 midterms (55%) and a Final Exam (25%).

When can I access the course?

The course will open on Saturday, January 13, 2018. We encourage you to go through the introductory materials during the first few days. Your first lecture will be on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
